ON STRESS

....what does it do to your skin and what you can do to avoid it.

Your hormones speed up your heartbeat, making you breathe faster and giving you a burst of energy – known as the fight-or-flight response. And while positive stress is helpful as it gets you to work harder or react faster.  Negative stress will bring with it bad effects. Common symptoms of stress include headache, stiff neck and tight shoulders, back pain, sweating and sweaty palms, stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea, and elevated blood pressure.

Excess stress can damage many parts of our body-even our skin. Worry lines, premature wrinkles and serious skin rashes can emerge as a result of stress. How? Stress causes the body to release hormones, constrict blood vessels,  and decrease circulation.  This results in decreased blood supply to the skin, leaving it dry, irritated and prone to infection.  Therefore the more stressed out you are, the worse your skin will look.

During stressful times, you can take certain steps t0 care for your skin.  Try exercising regularly as it improves blood flow and abnormalises hormone levels, which in turn keeps skin healthy and smooth.  You should also wash and exfoliates your skin thoroughly and gently everyday while treating breakouts promptly with proper creams, ointments and lotions.

To calm nerves and soothe stressed skin, take oatmeal baths or use skin products with colloidal oatmeal.  Epsom salts in a bath or soaks can be used for relaxation while soothing tense muscles.

In addition to having good skin hygiene, a good night’s sleep is essential.  Sleep renews the body’s ability to fight stress and heals skin.  The food you eat is also crucial.  Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to keep skin healthy and glowing.

You can also practice stress- reduction techniques such as yoga and meditation.
